Cunningham Hill Infant School Newsletter – October 2019
UPDATE FROM MISS COOPER
Harvest Festival was a lovely celebration. Thank you to everyone who sent in a donation for the St Albans and District foodbank for our Harvest festival. We were joined by a representative who told the children about where their donations would be going. Mrs Barwin, Kaden, Peggy, Louis, Athena, Joshua and Hugo went to the Foodbank Warehouse in Harpenden to see what happens to all of our food donations from our Harvest Festival. They met a foodbank volunteer who explained what happens when food is donated. They then sorted food into crates by best before dates and then sorted all of the carrier bags, ready for the picked food to be packed into. Last week was Democracy week. The children were given an opporuinty to decided the new golden rule for respect. Each class suggested a rule and it was put to a vote. Each child was given a ballot paper and were able to make their choice. The new golden rule is ‘We are polite to everybody’.

Children should have a coat in school for playing outside as we try to make sure that they get to play outdoors unless the weather is too severe. Please click here for the school uniform guidance.
Moments from Year 2
Year 2 have been busy! They had a fabulous time at Ashridge Estate, where they consolidated their learning about different habitats, local environment and environment art. They especially enjoyed their team activity of den building. We have continued to look at world geography and comparing places in hot and cold climates. Our geography lessons have been linked to the book we have been reading ‘Leaf’. In Big Write, children have written a range of different pieces also based on the book. In maths, we have used our place value knowledge to help solve more complex addition and subtraction questions. Silver class completed their swimming lessons with a swimming party and are sure that Gold class will enjoy their swimming lessons next term. Over the half term, children will not receive any home learning but please read with your child as often as possible. Thank you!
Moments from Year 1
What a busy first half term in Year 1.The children have enjoyed our topic of ‘Out and About’, including our trip to Highfield Park. This has included in depth research into our local area and learning more about animals in Geography and Science. The children have been developing their skills in Art and have produced some detailed pastel drawings of leaves. In Maths, the children have been learning about the ‘teen’ numbers and number bonds to ten. Mr. Banbridge has taught them a song called farmer Pete and his sheep to help learn the bonds to ten. We also sung some beautiful songs at our Harvest Festival. Thank you to all those families that contributed to our Food Bank collection. All the children have earned a well-deserved rest next week, ready for all the exciting learning next half term.
Moments from Reception
October has been a busy month in Reception, we have just celebrated our first Harvest Festival and I think we would all agree that the children sang beautifully, learning such a lot of words. The confidence to stand up and sing in front of an audience was superb and excites us for our Christmas play. We have read our first Literacy text “Wild” and completed a range of activities, such as going on an Autumn walk to make faces, producing a large painting/collage of the front of the book and talked lots about feelings. In Maths we have been looking at combining 2 groups to find the total and looking at the part, part, whole to start simple addition. We are learning about size, length and capacity next. Have a restful half term.
Camilla, Lena, Bethany, Kaden, Peggy and Bailey for their writing. Jacob, Valen and Mark for their home learning. Ollie, Neve and Sam for their Maths work. Leo and Arukshan for their Science work. Freya and Peggy for their RE learning.
