Dear Year 1 parents and carers, we apologise for the lack of blogging over the last few weeks.
The children have been very excited about the new topic: Let’s play. We have been looking at some old toys and comparing them to toys the children play with now. We have thought about the materials they were made from and how they were played with. Our art work has also been stimulated from toys as the children have drawn a toy, made a printing block of it and printed in the style of Andy Warhol.
In Big write we have begun looking at a new book: Traction Man which is a comic style novel. We have begun using our comic style voices and investigated noun phrases: evil pilllows / planet duvet / jet powered trainer! If any of you have any action man type dolls that are no longer played with in your house, please could you donate them to your child’s class, Also any sindy / barbie type dolls please! This is so we can act out the story and deepen the children’s understanding of the story.
For the last few weeks in maths we have begun learning to tell the time to o’clock and half past. The children are doing well with this. They have also learnt clockwise, anticlockwise, morning and evening. They have sequenced the times throughout the day but do seem to struggle with associating times to events happening. For example: breakfast is at 7 o’ clock. Next week we will be back to addition and subtraction. Please do practise quickfire addition and subtraction questions to 10.
In RE we have been learning about how different religions welcome babies into their Christian , Muslim or Hindu community. We will be comparing what is the same and different between these different religions.
The children have begun their spellings now. On a Monday the children are ‘tested’ through a dictation exercise of the spellings from the previous week. They are then introduced to 10 new words. They will write the words using look, cover, write check method each day in school. The words are also sent home for the children to practise in the same way. They also get to practise the words, (technology permitting) on purple mash. This can also be accessed from home. Extension ideas are written on the bottom of the spellings.
Have a lovely weekend
The Year 2 team.
