This term in Reception we are growing eggs and observing as they change into chicks.

On Tuesday, we had a visit from Aldenham Country Park who showed us a Hen, Rooster and ducks. We looked at the difference between the male and female chicken and then the difference between chickens and ducks.

The children noticed how the beaks are different as well as the feel of the feathers. They were very keen to stroke the birds.

We learnt about the chicks comb and wattle, understanding that these keep the birds cool.

We have discussed the lifecycle and each day, we say how the growth is progressing. The chicks should already have a beating heart, and their head, eyes, wings and tongue have begun forming.

We will update you as the project progresses, including which stage we are at and whether the chicks are hatching. Please bare in mind, this is due to take 21 days at least.
